Day 18: Marathon to Sanderson, Texas

53 Miles, 720 feet climbed

Today’s winds were milder but still pushing us back, not forward. Steve from DC and I rode together and ended up getting to the hotel first.

Concerns about tomorrow’s 119 mile ride in the face of projected 20+ mph headwinds gave rise to an idea from George that the group ride another 20 miles beyond Sanderson today, shuttle the bikes back to Sanderson and then shuttle to start tomorrow’s ride where we ended today. This would help the EFI (Every F** Inch) crowd. Not being so inclined and having an afternoon State Bar meeting to attend, I opted out of the extended ride.

If you were to look at the Zoom recording of the Bar meeting, you’ll probably see me swatting at bees. I was sitting outside on one of the hotel’s picnic tables. The bees were obsessed by my Big Gulp soda. I’m not sure why as it was a diet drink.

I listen to the Everyday Driver podcast, whose premise is that the cars we drive every day should be fun. I’ve also driven with them on their Utah adventure. Anyway, Paul, one of the hosts, is obsessed with Buc-ee’s, a largely Texas-located chain of travel plazas known for having a huge number of gas pumps and indoor food court serving barbeque (but with no tables at which to eat it). This tongue in cheek tribute (?) looks to be some sort of utility building.
